Why Review Accuracy Matters to Indiana Businesses

Indiana has a substantial small-business economy. The U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2025 Indiana profile reports 591,671 small businesses, representing 99.4% of businesses in the state.

Several sectors where reputation is often visible through Google Business Profiles are particularly large. The same SBA profile counts 66,189 small construction businesses, 64,483 small businesses in professional, scientific and technical services, and 42,493 in health care and social assistance.

For an Indiana contractor, professional practice or patient-facing business whose prospective customers use Google to compare providers, knowing whether a suspicious review is genuine, policy-compliant or potentially removable can be an important business decision.

Indiana has also seen recent reporting about abuse involving Google Business Profiles. In August 2026, WTHR reported on Indiana garage-door and locksmith businesses dealing with bad reviews and altered profile information. Google has also strengthened Maps protections during 2026 to address review scams, sudden spam-review activity and suspicious Business Profile edits.

The practical lesson is broader than simply watching the star rating. If unusual activity appears, check the reviews as well as your phone number, website, address and other important Business Profile details.

Can an Indiana Business Remove a Google Review?

A business cannot simply delete a review left by another Google user. Google allows businesses to report reviews that may violate its Maps policies, then evaluates the content and decides whether it should remain online.

Trustario helps by assessing the review, identifying potentially relevant policy issues and handling eligible disputes through appropriate Google channels. For a broader overview, see our Google review removal service.

What May Qualify for Removal?

A review may be worth challenging when the facts correspond to Google’s prohibited-content policies.

  • Fake engagement or rating manipulation: content not based on a genuine experience, or activity intended to manipulate a business’s rating.
  • Conflicts of interest: certain reviews involving competitors, current or former employment, contractual relationships, or other relevant professional or personal affiliations.
  • Impersonation or misrepresentation: content posted while pretending to be someone else or misrepresenting identity.
  • Coordinated spam or unusual review patterns: repeated or suspicious activity that may indicate rating manipulation.
  • Harassment or other prohibited conduct: threats, doxxing, certain personal attacks, or other prohibited content.
  • Off-topic content: unrelated political or social commentary, personal rants, or material not tied to a genuine experience with the business.

A warning sign is not the same thing as proof, and identifying a possible policy category does not guarantee removal. For current policy context, read Trustario’s April 2026 Google review policy update.

What Usually Cannot Be Removed?

A legitimate negative review does not normally become removable just because the business disagrees with it.

  • A real customer gives a low star rating.
  • The criticism feels one-sided or leaves out context.
  • The business strongly disagrees with the customer’s opinion.
  • The review is harsh but still reflects a genuine experience and complies with Google’s policies.

Google’s own guidance says businesses should not report reviews merely because they dislike or disagree with them. A genuine review can still violate a separate policy, so the actual content and circumstances matter.

For a deeper explanation, see the difference between an unfair review and a removable review.

What Should You Preserve Before Challenging a Suspicious Review?

If a review appears suspicious, preserve the information before taking action. Useful records may include:

  • the review URL;
  • a screenshot of the full review;
  • the reviewer’s displayed name and profile;
  • the date you first noticed it;
  • relevant appointment, customer, invoice or job records;
  • information showing a possible employment, competitor or other conflict-of-interest relationship;
  • repeated wording or unusual timing across several reviews;
  • screenshots of suspicious Business Profile changes; and
  • records of reports or decisions already received from Google.

These records do not guarantee removal. They help establish the facts for Trustario’s assessment and can provide useful context where Google’s reporting or appeal process permits it.

Do not publish private customer information simply to dispute a review.

How Trustario Handles an Eligible Review

Trustario uses a review-by-review, policy-based process rather than assuming every negative review is eligible.

1. Audit and evaluation

We review the disputed content and the circumstances you provide. The initial review audit is free.

2. Policy assessment

If the review appears potentially eligible, we identify the relevant Google policy issue and organize the available information. If it appears to be genuine, policy-compliant feedback, we do not represent it as automatically removable.

3. Compliant submission

Eligible disputes are handled through appropriate Google reporting and dispute channels. Trustario does not guarantee an outcome or claim special access to Google.

4. Outcome

Google decides whether the review is removed. If Google initially finds no policy violation, its Reviews Management Tool may provide a one-time appeal.

See How a Low-Star Review Affects Your Rating

Whether a review qualifies for removal and how much it affects your displayed rating are separate questions. Use Trustario’s calculator to estimate how your displayed average could change if a particular low-star review were no longer included.

The calculator does not determine eligibility and does not predict Google’s removal decision.

Google Review Removal for Businesses Across Indiana

Businesses throughout Indiana can request a Trustario review audit. Your location within the state does not change Google’s content policies. What matters is the review itself, the surrounding circumstances and whether there is a reasonable policy basis for a dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a Google review potentially removable in Indiana?

Indiana businesses are subject to the same Google Maps review policies as businesses elsewhere in the United States. A review may qualify when it violates rules involving fake engagement, rating manipulation, conflicts of interest, impersonation, harassment, off-topic content or another prohibited category. A negative rating alone is not sufficient.

Can a legitimate negative customer review be removed?

Generally, not simply because it is negative. If a review reflects a genuine experience and complies with Google’s policies, it may remain online even when the business believes it is unfair. A genuine review can still violate a separate Google policy, so each case needs to be evaluated on its actual content and circumstances.

What if I cannot find the reviewer in my customer records?

That is useful information to investigate, but it does not automatically prove that the review is fake. A Google display name may differ from the name in your records, and someone may have had a genuine interaction without appearing as a conventional customer. The stronger question is whether the review reflects a genuine experience and whether any other Google policy applies.

Does Trustario need access to my Google Business Profile?

In most cases, no. Trustario’s current pricing terms state that profile access is generally not required. If a rare situation requires access, the reason should be explained before you proceed.

How long does Google take to evaluate a review?

Trustario does not promise a specific removal date. Google says review evaluation typically takes several days, but the overall process can take longer depending on the case and whether an appeal is needed.
