QUICK ANSWER
Can a Yelp Review Be Removed?
Yes, when Yelp determines that the content violates its rules. A review being negative, damaging, harsh, or unwanted is not enough by itself. The useful question is which Yelp policy may apply and what evidence supports that conclusion.
Four Yelp Policy Questions That Matter Most
These are policy questions, not automatic removal triggers. The U.S. reporting page currently lists three main removal reasons. False-information cases require a separate, evidence-heavy analysis.
Apparent Conflict of Interest
Yelp expects reviews to come from people with an unbiased consumer interest. A current or former employee, competitor, business affiliate, friend or family member of the owner, or incentivized reviewer may raise a conflict question. Suspicion alone is not enough. Yelp asks for specific evidence that makes the relationship clear.
Not the Reviewer’s Own Consumer Experience
Yelp expects a review to reflect the writer’s own consumer or prospective-customer experience. Second-hand stories, media-driven commentary, arguments with another Yelper, reviews posted to the wrong business, copied content, or posts only about policies, hours, or offerings can raise a policy issue.
Inappropriate Material
Threats, hate speech, overtly lewd commentary, or improper disclosure of private information may violate Yelp’s rules. Yelp allows a broad range of expression, including occasional profanity, so ordinary harsh language alone is not an automatic removal ground.
Materially and Demonstrably False Information
This requires careful qualification. Yelp’s current U.S. main reporting page does not list false information among its three main reasons for removal. Yelp’s separate false or defamatory review guidance says it generally does not take sides in factual disputes. Current Yelp guidance in some other English-language markets explicitly refers to materially and demonstrably false information.
For U.S. businesses, do not treat Yelp as a fact-finding court
An opinion such as “the service was terrible” is different from an objectively testable statement. An ordinary disagreement such as “I waited 45 minutes” versus “our records show 20 minutes” is also different. Yelp says it generally allows both sides to tell their stories when there are competing versions of the truth. Serious legal questions should be discussed with qualified counsel.
See Yelp’s U.S. reporting guidance and Yelp’s false or defamatory review guidance.
What May Warrant a Policy Challenge
A review may deserve closer policy evaluation when the facts support issues such as:
- A clearly documented competitor, employee, former employee, affiliate, or other conflict relationship.
- A review describing somebody else’s experience rather than the writer’s own.
- A review posted to the wrong business or clearly copied from another source.
- Threats, hate speech, lewd material, or improper disclosure of private information.
- A concrete factual statement supported by strong evidence showing it is materially false, subject to Yelp’s factual-dispute limitations.
- An explicit compensation demand tied to deleting, changing, withholding, or posting a review.
These are possible policy issues, not automatic removal guarantees.
What Usually Does Not Qualify
Negative does not mean removable.
- A genuine one-star review from a customer.
- A harsh opinion about service, price, food, staff, or quality.
- A one-sided account that still reflects the reviewer’s own experience.
- An ordinary dispute about what happened when neither version is objectively provable.
- A reviewer name you do not recognize, without other evidence.
- Rude wording or occasional profanity by itself when it does not cross another policy line.
Yelp Review Eligibility Self-Check
Use these questions before reporting. The goal is to identify a real policy issue, not to find a label for ordinary criticism.
1. Is the issue merely that the review is negative?
If yes, that alone is insufficient. Look for a specific policy issue beyond the low rating or harsh tone.
2. Can you identify an apparent conflict of interest?
Consider a competitor, current or former employee, affiliate, friend or family relationship, or an incentivized reviewer. Preserve reliable evidence of the relationship.
3. Is the review based on somebody else’s experience?
Read the review closely. Is the writer describing their own interaction, or repeating what happened to another person?
4. Does it contain prohibited inappropriate material?
Look for threats, hate speech, lewd content, or improper disclosure of private information. Ordinary profanity does not automatically qualify.
5. Is there a materially demonstrable false factual statement?
Separate opinion from an objectively testable claim. A disagreement about what happened is not the same as evidence that a statement is materially false.
6. Is there evidence of explicit review extortion?
Look for a direct connection between compensation and deleting, changing, withholding, or posting a review.
A potential policy issue does not guarantee Yelp will remove the review. It indicates that the review deserves a closer policy evaluation.
Illustrative Yelp Review Scenarios
Illustrative scenarios only. These are not Trustario customer case studies and do not represent guaranteed outcomes.
Apparent Competitor Review
Policy question: The reviewer appears publicly associated with a competing business.
Not proof by itself: A low rating, suspicious timing, or industry-specific language.
Preserve: Public company pages, professional profiles, ownership records, and reviewer profile links.
Likely category: Apparent conflict of interest.
Next step: Document the relationship clearly and report only what the evidence supports.
Former Employee Review
Policy question: Yelp identifies current and former employees as potential conflicts of interest.
Not proof by itself: Internal-sounding wording or a guess about identity.
Preserve: Appropriate records establishing the employment relationship, dates, and review/profile URLs.
Likely category: Apparent conflict of interest.
Next step: Preserve relationship evidence without publishing unnecessary employment information.
Someone Else’s Experience
Policy question: The review describes what happened to a spouse, friend, employee, or relative and describes no interaction of the writer’s own.
Not proof by itself: The writer may still have had their own consumer or prospective-customer interaction.
Preserve: The complete review and relevant context about what interaction occurred.
Likely category: Not the reviewer’s own consumer experience.
Next step: Determine whose experience is actually being described before reporting.
Wrong Business or Copied Content
Policy question: The review clearly describes another company, or the text appears copied from another source.
Not proof by itself: Simply not recognizing the reviewer.
Preserve: The full review, the original source if copied, location details, dates, and other objective mismatches.
Likely category: Own-experience, wrong-business, or copied-content issue.
Next step: Show the objective mismatch or source clearly.
Threat or Private Information
Policy question: The review contains an explicit threat or improperly publishes private identifying information.
Not proof by itself: Strong criticism, rude language, or ordinary profanity.
Preserve: A full screenshot, URL, date, exact wording, and relevant context.
Likely category: Inappropriate material.
Next step: Report promptly. Serious threats may also warrant appropriate legal or safety assistance.
Explicit Review Extortion
Policy question: Money, a refund, a discount, or free service is explicitly tied to deleting, changing, withholding, or posting a review.
Not proof by itself: A customer asking for a refund or remedy without a review-related condition.
Preserve: Messages, timestamps, review/profile URLs, and the exact demand.
Likely category: Review extortion or prohibited compensation-for-review conduct.
Next step: Do not pay for removal. Preserve the evidence and contact Yelp Support.
What to Preserve Before Reporting a Yelp Review
Good evidence explains the policy issue. More evidence is not automatically better. Preserve what is relevant and handle sensitive information appropriately.
Core records
- Review URL.
- Reviewer profile URL.
- Full screenshot of the review.
- Posting date and relevant timestamps.
- Business records directly related to the disputed interaction.
- Appropriate employment records when a current or former employee relationship is genuinely at issue.
Context-specific evidence
- Publicly verifiable competitor affiliation.
- Communications with the reviewer.
- Extortion messages or compensation demands.
- Evidence the content concerns another business.
- Original source showing copied or plagiarized text.
- Other records directly supporting the specific policy question.
Privacy rule
Do not publicly disclose sensitive customer, patient, medical, financial, employment, or identifying records simply to rebut a review. Evidence intended for Yelp Support, qualified counsel, or another appropriate channel should be handled according to applicable privacy and legal obligations.
A CRITICAL YELP DIFFERENCE
Removed vs. Not Currently Recommended
Yelp moderation and Yelp’s recommendation software are different systems. A review can remain on Yelp even when the automated software does not currently recommend it.
REMOVED
Content Moderation Outcome
Yelp moderators evaluate reported content against Yelp’s Content Guidelines. If Yelp determines that a review violates its rules, Yelp may remove it from the platform. Reporting does not guarantee removal.
NOT CURRENTLY RECOMMENDED
Recommendation Software Outcome
A review that Yelp’s automated recommendation software does not currently recommend has not necessarily been deleted. It can remain accessible through the not-currently-recommended section and through the reviewer’s profile.
What Yelp’s not-currently-recommended status means
• Not-currently-recommended reviews do not currently count toward the business’s displayed star rating or displayed review count.
• Recommendation status can change as Yelp’s software learns more about the reviewer and the business.
• Yelp describes the recommendation system as entirely automated and based on hundreds of signals.
• Yelp says employees cannot manually override the recommendation status of an individual review.
• Yelp says advertisers and non-advertisers are treated the same by the recommendation software.
Trustario does not promise, offer, or claim to manipulate Yelp’s recommendation software.
Read Yelp’s explanation of recommended and not-currently-recommended reviews.
What If Someone Demands Money to Remove a Yelp Review?
Yelp draws an important distinction between an explicit review-for-compensation demand and a customer simply asking for a refund or remedy after a bad experience.
Relevant review-extortion issue
Examples include: “Pay me and I’ll delete the review,” “Give me the service for free and I’ll remove it,” or “Refund me or I will post a one-star review.”
The important feature is the explicit connection between compensation and review activity.
Ordinary complaint or refund request
A customer saying, “I had a bad experience and I want a refund,” is not the same thing by itself. Yelp says its Support team should be contacted for explicit offers to remove reviews for payment or threats to post negative reviews, not ordinary refund requests seeking to remedy a bad experience.
If an explicit review-related demand is made
- Do not engage with the demand or pay for removal.
- Preserve the entire communication.
- Save the review URL and reviewer profile URL.
- Keep timestamps and screenshots.
- Contact Yelp Support promptly and provide the relevant evidence.
- Consider professional or legal assistance when the circumstances warrant it.
What Not to Do
The goal is a legitimate policy evaluation, not pressure, manipulation, or review suppression.
Do not pay for review removal
Yelp prohibits offering incentives such as discounts, refunds, gift cards, freebies, or other compensation in exchange for preventing, changing, or removing a review.
Do not use intimidation to suppress a review
FTC rules address physical threats, intimidation, groundless legal threats, and certain knowingly or recklessly false public accusations used to make consumers remove or change reviews. Legitimate legal rights can still exist and should be handled with an appropriate factual and legal basis.
Do not buy replacement positive reviews
Fake reviews and incentives conditioned on positive or negative sentiment can create both platform and federal compliance risk. Manipulation is not a remedy for manipulation.
Do not ask insiders to counter-post
Do not ask employees, friends, family members, or other affiliated people to post counter-reviews. Yelp tells businesses not to solicit Yelp reviews and treats certain insider relationships as conflicts of interest.
Do not fabricate evidence
Only report relationships, communications, transactions, or factual issues that you can support. Do not manufacture screenshots, affiliations, customer records, or other evidence.
Do not expose confidential information publicly
Do not publish sensitive customer, patient, employee, medical, financial, or identifying records in a public response just to prove your position.
Do not confuse recommendation status, advertising, and moderation
A not-currently-recommended review is not the same as a removed review. Yelp also says advertising does not provide special recommendation treatment. Repeated reporting does not turn legitimate criticism into a policy violation.
For federal review-practice rules, see the FTC Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule Q&A.
Do Not Ask Customers for Yelp Reviews
Yelp’s current guidance tells businesses not to ask customers, mailing-list subscribers, friends, family members, or others to review them on Yelp. Yelp also prohibits incentives for reviews and incentives for removing reviews.
This is a Yelp-specific distinction that matters. A review-request practice used on another platform should not automatically be copied to Yelp.
How Yelp Reporting Works
You can use Yelp’s own reporting process without hiring Trustario. Understanding that process first helps you decide whether professional assistance is useful.
Report from Yelp for Business
- Open the Reviews section for the business.
- Locate the review you believe violates Yelp’s rules.
- Open the three-dot More Options menu.
- Select Report Review.
- Use the most accurate policy basis available and keep your explanation focused on the actual violation.
You may need to claim the business page before using business-owner reporting tools. See Yelp’s current reporting instructions.
What happens after a report
- Yelp moderators evaluate the reported content against Yelp’s Content Guidelines.
- Reporting does not guarantee removal.
- Yelp says the decision may take several days and is sent to the email associated with the account.
- If more than a week passes without a response, Yelp’s current U.S. guidance says to contact Support.
- If Yelp reviews the content but leaves it online, you can ask Support for a second evaluation. Yelp says original decisions are not commonly reversed.
This is a moderation and reevaluation process, not a guaranteed appeal.
How Trustario Can Help With an Accepted Yelp Case
Trustario publicly describes a platform-specific, evidence-backed dispute approach and identifies Yelp as one of the platforms its team has experience navigating. For Yelp, the first step is deciding whether there is a legitimate policy basis at all.
1. Free Yelp Audit
Send the Yelp business page, the review URL, and relevant context. We assess whether the issue appears to fit a legitimate Yelp policy category.
2. Policy Classification
We separate legitimate criticism from possible conflicts, second-hand experiences, inappropriate material, evidence-heavy factual issues, and explicit review-extortion situations.
3. Evidence Review
We identify which records are relevant to the policy question and which information should remain private or adds little to the case.
4. Yelp-Specific Submission Support
For an accepted case, Trustario prepares the policy-based position and supporting context for the Yelp reporting or support path available for that situation. We do not claim a special Yelp queue, representative, partnership, or moderator access.
5. Available Follow-Up
Where appropriate, the case can be followed through Yelp’s available Support or reevaluation options. Yelp still controls the moderation decision.
6. Outcome Confirmation
If Yelp removes the targeted review, the outcome is verified. For Yelp removal work, payment is due only after successful removal. No outcome is guaranteed.

What If Yelp Does Not Remove the Review?
A denied report does not mean you should invent another violation or assume a professional service has a hidden backdoor. Reassess the facts and use the options Yelp actually provides.
- Recheck whether the reported category genuinely fits the review.
- Identify whether relevant evidence was missing, especially when alleging a conflict of interest.
- Contact Yelp Support if you have questions about the moderation response.
- Request a second evaluation where Yelp’s current support process permits it, understanding that Yelp says original decisions are not commonly reversed.
- Consider a professional public response or direct message for legitimate feedback that remains online.
- Preserve evidence and seek qualified legal advice if serious threats, privacy issues, defamation questions, or other legal rights may be implicated.
See Yelp’s follow-up guidance and second-evaluation guidance.
Yelp Review Issues Can Look Different by Industry
The same Yelp rules apply across industries, but the evidence, privacy concerns, and nature of the consumer interaction can differ.
Restaurants & Hospitality
Wrong-location reviews, second-hand experiences, media-driven commentary, compensation demands tied to refunds, and private employee information can raise different questions. A real diner’s harsh opinion about food or service is still not automatically removable.
Dental & Medical Practices
Privacy makes public responses especially sensitive. A practice should not disclose confidential patient information to rebut a review. A relative’s review also requires careful analysis of whether the writer had their own consumer or prospective-customer interaction.
Home Services & Automotive
A property owner, tenant, contractor, driver, family member, or other participant may each have a different relationship to the transaction. A name missing from the customer database is not enough by itself to prove a Yelp violation.
Legal & Professional Services
A reviewer does not necessarily need to become a paying client to have a genuine prospective-customer experience. Opposing parties, employees, competitors, and other affiliated people require a different conflict-of-interest analysis.
Why Businesses Use Trustario
Trustario’s live site describes an evidence-backed, platform-specific approach and a confidential process. Its About page also identifies Yelp among the platforms the team has experience navigating.
Policy Before Promises
The first question is whether a legitimate Yelp policy issue appears to exist. A negative review is not automatically treated as removable.
Evidence-First Review
Where evidence matters, the analysis focuses on verifiable information instead of assumptions about reviewer identity or motive.
Platform-Specific Approach
A Yelp case is evaluated under Yelp’s own rules, including its conflict standard, consumer-experience requirement, solicitation rules, extortion guidance, and separate recommendation software.
Confidential Process
Trustario describes its process as confidential. The page also encourages businesses to keep sensitive customer, patient, employment, and financial records out of public replies.
Results-Based Yelp Pricing
The Yelp audit is free. For Yelp review removal work, payment is due only after a successful removal.
No Suppression Tactics
Trustario does not claim to suppress legitimate criticism, buy positive reviews, pay reviewers for deletion, or manipulate Yelp’s recommendation software.

Frequently Asked Questions About Yelp Review Removal
Can I remove a Yelp review myself?
You cannot directly delete another user’s Yelp review from your business account. You can report a review that you believe violates Yelp’s rules, and Yelp decides whether it should be removed.
What types of Yelp reviews can be removed?
Yelp’s current U.S. reporting guidance highlights apparent conflicts of interest, reviews that do not focus on the writer’s own consumer experience, and inappropriate material. False-information issues require extra care because Yelp generally does not take sides in ordinary factual disputes.
Will Yelp remove a review simply because it is false?
Not necessarily. Saying that a review is false does not automatically make it removable. Yelp generally does not decide ordinary factual disagreements between a reviewer and a business. A concrete factual assertion supported by strong objective evidence is a different issue from an opinion or disputed recollection.
What happens if the reviewer is a competitor?
A genuine, demonstrable competitor relationship can raise Yelp’s apparent-conflict-of-interest rule. Preserve reliable evidence connecting the reviewer to the competing business. Suspicion alone is not enough.
Can Yelp remove a former employee review?
Yelp currently identifies current and former employees as examples of apparent conflicts of interest. The relationship should be clear and supported where possible. Removal is still Yelp’s decision.
What if I cannot find the reviewer in my customer records?
That can be relevant, but it does not prove a policy violation. Yelp recognizes consumers and prospective customers, and the person’s Yelp identity may not match your records. Evaluate what the review describes and look for additional evidence.
What is a not currently recommended Yelp review?
It is a review that Yelp’s automated recommendation software is not currently recommending prominently. It has not necessarily been deleted. Such reviews remain accessible but currently do not factor into the business’s displayed star rating or review count.
Can Yelp manually move a review into the not-recommended section?
Yelp currently says employees cannot manually override the recommendation software for an individual review. Trustario does not claim to control or influence that system.
What should I do about Yelp review extortion?
Do not pay for removal. Preserve the messages, review and profile URLs, screenshots, dates, and the exact demand, then use Yelp’s Support process. A normal refund request without a review-related condition is not the same thing.
What happens after I report a Yelp review?
Yelp moderators evaluate the content against Yelp’s guidelines. Yelp says this may take several days and sends the decision to the email associated with the account. Reporting does not guarantee removal.
What if Yelp does not remove it?
Recheck the policy basis and evidence. Yelp permits Support follow-up and requests for a second evaluation, while noting that original moderation decisions are not commonly reversed. A public response or direct message may be appropriate for legitimate feedback that remains online.
Can Trustario guarantee Yelp review removal?
No. Yelp controls the moderation decision. Trustario can evaluate eligibility and support an accepted case through the available Yelp processes. For Yelp removal work, payment is due only after successful removal.
